June Gruber received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from U.C. Berkeley and is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Colorado where she directs the Positive Emotion and Psychopathology Laboratory. She is also a Faculty Fellow of the Institute of Cognitive Science and Center for Teaching and Learning, and was previously an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Yale University.
Dr. Gruber is a licensed clinical psychologist and has published over 100 articles and chapters and has edited 2 books including the Oxford Handbook of Positive Emotion and Psychopathology and Positive Emotion: Integrating the Light Sides and Dark Sides with Judith Moskowitz. Her research has been recognized by the Association for Psychological Science’s Rising Star Award and the Janet Taylor Spence Award for Transformative Early Career Contributions, the Society for Research in Psychopathology's Early Career Award, Yale University's Arthur Greer Memorial Prize for Outstanding Junior Faculty, and two NARSAD Young Investigator Awards. Her teaching and mentoring awards include the 2023 Cogswell Award for Inspirational Instruction, the 2022 Boulder Faculty Assembly Excellence in Teaching and Pedagogy Award, 2020 UROP Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award. Dr. Gruber was previously an Associate Editor and Interim Editor-in-Chief for Perspectives on Psychological Science and is currently an Associate Editor at Emotion
Dr. Gruber's research uses a multi-modal affective science approach to understand positive emotion and reward-related difficulties in psychopathology. Her work examines perturbations in positive valence systems in clinical populations characterized by positive emotion difficulties (e.g., bipolar disorder and depression) as well as across other clinical phenomenon and in healthy community samples of adults and adolescents. Dr. Gruber is actively engaged in science outreach and dissemination of the science of emotions and mental health, co-leading a call to action centered on the mental health crisis sparked by COVID-19. With respect to teaching, Dr. Gruber has taught courses on emotion, the science happiness, and psychopathology. She has developed a free online Coursera #TalkMentalIllness course, and an online course in Human Emotion and associated Experts in Emotion Interview Series at Yale University. Dr. Gruber has co-authored a column for young scientists in Science Careers, writes for APS' Teaching Current Directions in Psychological Science, and received an IMPART grant to co-lead a workshop supporting underrepresented women in the sciences.
